Four youths assaulted a teenage girl at Itaunja town in Lucknow district on Monday and chopped off three of her fingers when she was returning from tuition, the police said.

The victim's family said the attack was led by Kailash Kumar, who held her responsible for ruining his marriage plans by informing his fiancée of their past relationship. Kumar was arrested on Tuesday but his companions are absconding.

The four youths stopped the autorickshaw the 17-year-old victim was travelling in, near Chandpur village.

They allegedly dragged the Class 12 student out of the vehicle, beat her up and chopped off the fingers of her right hand. She lay bleeding and unconscious for 30 minutes till some acquaintances informed her family and the police. She was then taken to a health centre. "We have lodged an FIR against the culprits who carried out the barbaric act," station officer Shashikant Pandey said.
