A team of 12 students from Amity International School, Noida, have brought laurels to their school and the city by winning the prestigious Annual International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISDCC) held recently at the Nasa Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.
The team was also the only one from Asia to make it to the final round and defeated four other teams of 50 participants each to clinch the title.
The 12 students — Dhruv Khanna, Aabhas Vaish, Aman Agarwal, Anuj Harisinghani, Rishab Srivastava, Chittaranjan Prasad, Suchit Jain, Rahul Rajput, Tanay Asija, Anant Chaturvedi, Grishma Purewal of class 11 and Mudit Gupta of class 10 — were part of a company named “Vulture Aviation”. The company also included teams from Latin America, North America and two teams from the UK and the USA.
For over 20 years, the ISSDC has been teaching industrial skills to high school students. The competition puts high school students in the shoes of aerospace industry engineers as they design a city in space, apt for housing over 10,000 people.
The Amity team designed two main settlements and four outlying settlements to accommodate a population of 24,000 as well as a transient population of 3,000 on Mars using a transparent material ‘Aluminum Oxinitride’.
While designing the settlement, the team members worked on all aspects, including structural engineering, automation, operations, human engineering, marketing and finance, schedule and cost.
Dr Amita Chauhan, chairperson, Amity International Schools, said, “We are proud to have such brilliant students who have made the country proud with their talent and hard work. We are inspired by scientist and visionary Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s work in science and technology. We had been participating in the competition for eight years now, but this year we finally made it to the top.”
Students said that their victory was the outcome of a year-long toil. They said in involved studying each and every aspect of developing a colony in Mars — the type of material to be used in designing the colony, waste and water management, external transportation, power generation, water recycling, cargo handling, distribution of electricity, storage of excess electricity and mode of transportation with earth.
