The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is planning to launch its virtual India campus with online courses for students and working engineers next month. In the first phase, it will offer 12 tutor-led courses on engineering design and engineering management.
Courses lined up for the first phase are:
n Drawing interpretation
n Basic geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
n Advanced geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
n Introduction to finite element analysis (FEA) – basic level
n Finite element analysis (FEA) – advanced level
n Computer aided design (CAD) & manufacturing – basic level
n Planning and adjusting business strategies
n Developing products, services and processes
n Leading individuals and engineering project teams
n Financial resources and procurement
n Marketing and sales
n Engineering maintenance, operations and change
The first session is slated to start on September 14 this year. Aspirants can enrol online from anywhere in India. The six-week online courses would include weekly materials, online discussion boards and quizzes, and access to a subject matter expert, says Jackie Oppenheim, Director, ASME Training and Development.
All offerings will not be certification programmes, with one exception: Engineering management courses, if all modules are taken, would make a student eligible for the Engineering Management Certification Fundamental (EMCF) / Engineering Management Certification Professional (EMCP) exams, subject to meeting certain criteria. ASME conducts the EMCF and EMCP exams with contributions from other US bodies such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Society of Automobile Engineers, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. But all courses will be from ASME with a certificate awarded on successful completion.
ASME has active student sections at IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, BITS Pilani, BITS Pilani Goa Campus, VIT
Vellore and PSG Coimbatore.
