Twenty-seven Board toppers from different states have joined the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani campuses this year. Of these, 25 joined the Pilani campus, and one each, the Goa and Hyderabad campuses.
These bright students include toppers from Boards of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Tripura, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The institution held an orientation function for the new enrolees at Pilani. Speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor L K Maheshwari said these students have performed extremely well all these years. Every year, BITS offers direct admission to all Board toppers of the country.
Except for direct admission to Board toppers, all admissions to the institute are based on merit, through its online entrance test, BITSAT. Over 1,23,800 aspirants applied for 2000 seats this year in the institute’s Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses. This year, 92,543 candidates wrote the test as against 83,930 last year -- about 12 per cent hike.
Calling for high standards of honesty amongst the students, the vice chancellor administered the Pledge for Ethics to the new entrants which reads as follows:
“We, the students of BITS, do hereby commit ourselves to the highest ethical and professional conduct and pledge that We shall respect human rights of others and shall not indulge in any form of ragging. We shall not use any unfair means in the examinations and in other activities at BITS.”
