Located in south Mumbai, Elphinstone College is an institution of higher education affiliated with the University of Mumbai. Established in 1856, it is one of the oldest of colleges of the University of Mumbai. It is also known for having played a key role in the spread of Western education in the Bombay Presidency.
The year 2006 marked the sesquicentennial celebrations of the college (from 1856–2006). At present it offers undergraduate level courses in the arts, sciences and commerce and is under the Maharashtra Government. Locally, the college is famous for its gothic architecture. The building has been recently categorised as a Grade I heritage structure.
The college alumni include Dadabhai Naoroji, Mahadeo Govind Ranade, Jamshedji Tata, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Homi Bhabha, Sonal Mansingh and Ajit Wadekar. It has been accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).
Elphinstone College offers courses at the graduate level in BA(Bachelor of arts), BSc (Bachelor of science), BCom (Bachelor of commerce), BBA and Bachelors in hotel and tourism management (BHTM).
The building, half of which is under Mumbai Archives, houses a gymkhana, a computer lab and has a well endowed library with over 90,000 books. The college activities are grouped under two main bodies — the college gymkhana and the Hamill Sabha. As far as extra curricular activities are concerned, there are various clubs such as the nature club, the music club, the Elphinstonian Society (alumni), etc.
The college is also recognised as a Centre for Research by Mumbai University in subjects such as English, Hindi, Marathi and history. Students reading for a PhD can also register at the college.
An annual technology festival called Techstar is held in November to which other colleges are invited to take part in events such as Java debugging, quiz, debate, digital art photography, grand prix, DJ mixing, treasure hunt, and most interestingly LAN gaming.
There is a placement cell in the college. There is also a well equipped audio visual room.
