Wilson College, located opposite the Chowpatty Beach in South Mumbai, is an institution that goes back to 1832. The founder of this institution was the Rev John Wilson D.D., F.R.S. of the Scottish Missionary Society. John and his wife Margaret arrived in Bombay on February 14, 1829, learnt the local language and with great zeal set up schools for boys and girls of all castes and classes. For many years, both the school and college sections were housed in one building, until the current site of the college was secured in 1889. Since 1963, the college began functioning under the Management of the John Wilson Education Society. The alumni of the college includes students who were active participants of the freedom movement, such as Morarji Desai, Acharya Kriplani, Nissim Ezekiel, and Bharat Ratna recipient PV Kane. Wilson College is a Christian Minority Institution and is closely related to CNI. It aims at education of the Christian community and extends its facilities and services to other communities too.
Academics and activities
Wilson College offers courses in BA (Bachelor of arts), BMS (Bachelor of management studies), BMM. (Bachelor of mass media), B Sc (Bachelor of science), and BSc in computer science and in information Technology. The college also has a course in MSc (Masters of Science). Apart from this, annual PhD programmes are also held.
The college conducts the Co-operative Education Programme for select students from the arts and science department to equip them with skills to work in the corporate world. Various corporate dignitaries are invited for talks. The programme also facilitates internships in corporations. A counselling centre and a placement cell are also present in the campus. Wilson College boasts of a well-known library that dates back to 1936.
Infrastructure and other facilities
The college campus has a basketball and a badminton court. Moreover, the famous Wilson College Gymkhana, located not far from the college, has a cricket and a football field, where the annual sports function is held in October. The nature club of Wilson College has a membership of as large as 500 and organises nature trails, treks in coordination with the WWF (World Wildlife Federation).
A Women’s Development Cell holds training and discussions for women rights and support. The National Service Scheme (NSS) holds three blood donation camps in a year, besides working for NGOs and the underprivileged.
The college has three main annual festivals. Wilforia, the inter-collegiate festival takes place in August. Polaris is the festival organised by the BMM department to which the BMM departments of all other colleges are invited. The BMS department holds its festival Adore in August. It also has a very active French department. The college has two hostels for boys and one for girls.
