Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, in partnership with the BITS Alumni Association, launched BITSConnect 2.0, a cross-campus technology initiative recently. At a conceptual level, this initiative is envisaged to strengthen and aid the deemed-to-be-university’s emphasis on research — BITS Pilani’s vision is to be among the top, research-driven universities of Asia by 2020.
With the launch of BITSConnect 2.0, which includes immersive tele-presence, high-definition video conferencing and live streaming technologies, the university aims to bridge geographical distances across its four campuses and global knowledge centres. It also plans to facilitate collaboration among faculty, students, industry partners and alumni for education, research, consultation and mentorship.
Bijendra Nath Jain, vice chancellor, BITS, says, “This joint university alumni initiative will provide seamless integration of all campuses and strengthen existing industry linkages. It will also enable remote placements with minimal travel costs to prospective employers and facilitate a more consultative and speedier decision-making process. This in turn will translate to better efficiencies and upgradation on both the administrative and academic front.”
Jain further adds, “The best technical and business minds from the global alumni community have come together to (design) this project and many have contributed with funds. The architecture for the tele-presence is unique as it employs specific solutions for conference room and classroom interface.”
