AIPMT candidates want nationwide delay in the counselling for admission to MBBS and BDS colleges in the wake of the retest ordered by the Supreme Court (SC).
The apex court had recently directed the CBSE to re-conduct All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and announce the results by August 17, after the large-scale irregularities had come to the fore.
Several states including Punjab which held their own MBBS entrance examination to fill the 85% state quota seats are also going ahead with their counselling process, which has put the students in the lurch.
“What if I don't get the seat I wish after the counselling of Punjab PMT and later I excel in AIPMT? Moreover, in case I go ahead with PMT counselling and pay fee to secure a seat, but crack AIPMT later on, then only a part of the already paid fee will be refunded. If counselling process of all the medical colleges is not delayed, there would be a big mess and heavy financial loss to the parents,” said Abhrr Verma, AIPMT candidate.
He said, “Manipal Medical College refunds just 50% of the fee once it starts the session. One year fee of this college is over `8 lakh.”
It is worth mentioning here that the parents are heading towards various private medical colleges to secure seats for their wards even if they are expecting to get a good rank in the AIPMT.
Another AIPMT aspirant, Ayush Jain, said, “It has become really difficult for us. We have to make preparations for the exam again but at the same time medical colleges have scheduled their counselling. Medical Council of India (MCI) should delay the counselling of all the colleges to avoid further hassle. I am really confused as I am going to attend the counselling of CMC Ludhiana on June 23. It would require me to submit my original certificates.”
People have been writing to the MCI and health ministry since SC ordered CBSE to re-conduct the exam.
Inderjeet Kaur Sandhu, principal, Sant Isher Singh Public School, SAS Nagar, said, “Punjab colleges are planning to go ahead with the counselling, admissions and starting the session as scheduled irrespective of the AIPMT. The students, who will get admission through AIPMT, will have to suffer as they will miss out on a month of their very first year of professional studies. MCI should direct all the medical colleges across the country to withhold their admission process till the result of AIPMT is declared.”
Appreciating the decision of the Supreme Court, Arvind Goyal, a local academician, said, “It is good that the SC has given an early deadline to the CBSE. Now, we can expect that the session will not be delayed if everything right from result declaration to the counselling is accelerated. The MCI and health ministry should intervene and relax the last date (September 30) for admissions if needed.”
