Collaborate, compete

Focus on innovation, knowledge and creativity are the high points of an education at IMI.

For Gurpreet Kalra, a student of the PGDM programme at the International Management Institute (IMI), being here is all about competitions and loads of fun. “I love the faculty and the competitions organised by clubs and committees of this institution. With all this, however, you have a very demanding and rigorous academic life that is shaped by some of the best names in the business,” says Kalra.

The competitions “help you put the theory you learnt into practice and allow you to think practically. One can see innovative ideas coming from the leaders of tomorrow,” he says.

Everything from peers, the design of the curriculum, faculty, relevance of the course, and guest lectures to the facilities provided etc are important elements in a student’s life. Shriya Mantri, a PGDM candidate, is happy she got all of these at IMI.

“The good thing about IMI is the atmosphere. It’s a mix of fun and focus. It is like being on a roller-coaster ride,” she says.

USP: The institute believes in the culture of collaboration and competition among people to generate ideas while adding value at each stage. “IMI creates an environment which is conducive to innovation, knowledge and creativity. Providing high-quality management education and acknowledging the ever-changing social and business needs are some of its unique aspects,” says Vijay Vancheswar, professor, marketing.

Programmes: IMI offers the following: Postgraduate diplomas in management, human resources management; management and PhD programme.

These programmes have been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and have been recognised by the Association of Indian Universities.

Faculty: The institute has 82 faculty members, including 38 professors, nine associate professors and five assistant professors. There are 30 visiting faculty members as

IT quotient: A network of more than 400 computers is WiFi-enabled to ensure mobile computing at all locations including hostel rooms, amphitheatre and canteen. The campus has 30mbps, 24-hour high-speed internet connectivity and two exclusive high-tech computer labs which are equipped with more than 100 computers for online classes and practice sessions.

Online assessment software is also installed on the network for grading, feedback, quizzes and attendance.

Infrastructure: The amphitheatre is the centre of attraction at IMI. It is the hub of academic life around which the academic block, residence and recreational facilities are located.

The academic block consists of spacious lecture halls, the Tata Chemicals Computer Centre, a conference room, an auditorium, a library, faculty chambers and administrative offices. All lecture halls have access to latest presentation equipment such as DLP multimedia projectors, computers, electronic copy boards, OHP projectors, intranet connectivity and a sound system. The institute also has hostel facility for students.

Placements: Around 50 companies visited the campus last year. Prominent employers from the BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) sector were HSBC Bank, JP Morgan Chase, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDBI Bank etc. The profiles were for finance, marketing and operations specialisations. In the consulting space, Deloitte Consulting, Barclays Shared Services, EXL Services, AT Kearney, Ernst & Young GSS, Infosys Technologies and Axis Risk Consulting were among the major employers. Students were also able to bag opportunities in companies like Asian Paints, UB Group, MakeMyTrip and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd etc.

Clubs and societies: Some of the student clubs include Imi-agine - Creative and Communications Committee, which deals with website management, blogging, public speaking, vendor management, emceeing and event handling. E-cell is a student body formed to cater to the needs of aspiring entrepreneurs. Econimi is the economics club of IMI. Students also publish a magazine called Ecosynthesis.

Another popular club is Promethean or the marketing club.
