A little-known school in Ahmedabad has joined a select group of structures, including US President George W Bush's ranch in Dallas, by trapping and using the earth's energy successfully for a year to regulate temperature inside its library, the first attempt of its kind in India.

The Tripda Education Trust has fitted a geothermal system unit, using Chinese technology, inside its school library for the last one year to successfully cool and heat the library premises and that too in an eco-friendly manner.

Geothermal facts

Geothermal energy is the heat derived from earth

It is the thermal energy contained in the rock and fluid that fills the fractures and pores within the rock in earth’s crust

The idea behind installing a geothermal unit in the school library is that it both heats and cools and is a non-polluting device

"The idea behind installing a geothermal unit in the school library is that it gives both heat and cooling and is a non-polluting device. It is also cost-effective,” Archit Bhatt, principal of the Tripda Education Trust, said. Geothermal energy is the heat derived from the earth.

It is the thermal energy contained in the rock and fluid that fills the fractures and pores within the rock in the earth's crust. "The unit has been fitted in the library of the institute, which is 580 square feet in area, and its results have been good for the past one year. The maintainance so far has been .05 per cent," Minesh Patel, an alumni of the school and owner of Geo-clinic, that installed the country's first unit, said.

Apart from the school in Ahmedabad, the more prominent places that use the eco-friendly system are the ranch of the US President in Dallas, the Olympic stadium in China and the Brooklyn Children's Museum in New York.

The school management is impressed with the unit's performace and are keen to cover the entire school premises if it is feasible. "We are very happy with the performance of the first unit in the library. The electricity consumption is also low by 25 per cent at the library and it is noiseless", the school principal added.
