The lowdown
Accessory design includes several streams such as product design, fashion design, jewellery design etc. Designing corporate spaces, kitchenware and furniture also qualify as accessory design. Creativity plays a very important role where design is concerned. Price, affordability and manufacturability are hygiene factors. If your design is not unique, it’s not going to be looked at and therefore not noticed and hence not bought. A designer must be sensible to detail and have good presentation and conceptualisation skills as design is an expression of what one thinks, feels and experiences. He must be observant and have an open mind. He needs to respect people he designs for and understand the customers well and their needs. Last but not least, the profession does not have any boundaries like other professions and if you’re a kind of person who is ready to learn and relearn with every new project, there is no better profession than this. Since there are hundreds of brands fighting for shelf space, an accessory designer has to keep evolving. The need for accessory designers is only going to grow because the size of India’s retail sector is already estimated at around US$450 billion
