Debunking myths

Don’t go by some preconceived ideas and notions about college life. You’ll have a great time if you behave and study responsibly

One must be a 90 percenter to get into DU: Some courses – even in top-notch colleges – are within the reach of many aspirants.

It’s only about fun and freedom: Colleges allow you a lot of fun time and freedom but you need to set some ground rules for yourself to garner as much knowledge as you can. If you take college work the way it should be, it’s hard work - writing assignments, projects, researching in the library, taking notes, doing internships/field work, organising/participating in co-curricular activities. The world is now big on innovation. If you wish to get an edge, get original. Get thinking.

Bunk when one wants to: You need to be on the right side of the attendance rules. Some college authorities can really mean business. Students found short of attendance are now being debarred from taking their college exams and have had to repeat a year.

Marks don’t matter much: They do. Not just in the final mark sheet but even in individual years, in each paper. Many companies, during recruitment, insist on graduates having a certain score (say, 60% and above) in each and every semester.

A correspondence degree doesn’t have much value: A correspondence course matching your aptitude, interest, capability and goals in life, coupled with meaningful, relevant work experience can give you clarity of purpose and give you an edge in the job market.

Ragging is tradition: No, it’s banned. Period.

If anyone tries to rag you, you don’t have to take it lying low. Keep the anti-ragging cell’s number/hotline handy.

One has to be a part of the coolest society on campus: Don’t join a society or club just because everyone else is making a beeline for it. Take your time to figure out where you are able to make best use of your spare time and talent. It could even be some initiative outside the campus. Find out what drives you.

One can have one’s way in college: As said earlier about the authorities, many teachers, too, will not overlook breach in discipline. Never take the faculty for granted. If you err (majorly), slacken or cross the line, the faculty can escalate the matter to your parents.

One should wear new outfits every day: Take it easy. You are not there to win a fashion pageant. Dress according to the occasion, your pocket and comfort. You don’t necessarily have to follow the latest fad.
