Delhi’s universities welcome you

The senior school and college exam phase is almost over and it’s admission time at some of the major universities in Delhi for their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. While a large number of candidates will be planning to join the University of Delhi, institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University, Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University For Women, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi Technological University, Jamia Hamdard and TERI University are also important options. In this two-part special on the options beyond Delhi University, we look at some of these universities, their admissions processes and what they have to offer to aspirants.
Expanding its reach by going online for admissions, GGSIPU offers a variety of professional courses to students from across the country. Admissions will end on April 10 for around 29,000 seats for 150 academic programmes. Talking about the latest change in the university’s admission procedure, GGSIPU vice chancellor Anup Singh Beniwal says, “Students can apply from anywhere. We are also expecting an increase in the number of applicants with the process going online from about two lakh last year to about 2.25 lakh this year.”
The university, which functions on the public-private model, has 111 affiliated institutes, of which 27 belong to the Delhi government and the Centre. For the first time, the university has decided to hold CETs for all regular courses.
Jamia Millia Islamia
Applicants who wish to study at JMI have a lot to look forward to this year. The university is in the process of introducing 12 smart classrooms for nine faculties and three academic centres, including the AJK-Mass Communication Research Centre and Centre for Culture, Media and Governance. These ICT-enabled classrooms will have interactive boards and projectors and the campus will be Wi-Fi enabled. The university is also in process of upgrading its infrastructure with additional hostels for girls, a new building for the department English, an auditorium at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and a café near the central library, among other things.
The application window for all programmes is April 21, 2014 to July 1, 2014, which means that candidates must submit their applications within this period, as per the varying submission schedule mentioned in the prospectus. The university conducts entrance tests for various courses. Jamia offers as many as 51 bachelor’s programmes, which are a fine mix of science, commerce, arts and humanities.
Conceived as a seat of higher learning in Unani medicine, Islamic studies, biosciences, pharmacy, nursing and other areas, Jamia Hamdard has emerged as a higher education institution with distinct academic programmes. The university offers a graduate programme in IT and computer applications and PG courses in IT, computer applications, and occupational therapy, among others.
Jawaharlal Nehru University
The application process for courses is over. Students are now gearing up for entrance tests which will be held from May 16 to 19, 2014, for admission to various full-time programmes of study in 51 cities. SK Sopory, VC, JNU, says: “We have improved the online admission process this year. We have also strengthened our grievance/troubleshooting system. At JNU, we are starting the following new courses from 2014-15: Direct admission to the PhD programme in human rights studies; direct admission to PhD programme in energy studies; MPhil/PhD in women’s studies and pre-PhD in nanosciences (NET/JFR).” JNU has earmarked grants for one new hostel and an academic building.
