While Indian students may not be upbeat about doing a course in Indian language at DU, foreigners, it seems, are very keen to study them.

According to the foreign students’ advisor at DU, AS Narang, “A very large number of students from Mauritius apply for Urdu courses at DU as it opens opportunities for them to teach back home.”

The Koreans dominate the field of foreign students applying for Indian languages. Many of them apply for courses in Hindi. “Courses like Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi are very popular among these students. This year too, many of them have applied for different courses for their own reasons,” explained Narang.

“Earlier, many Russians came to study at DU. But today, there are hardly any Russians. We receive applications from Central Asian republics, China and the US,” added another official.
