“You’re going to school and not a fashion show” This is what my mom said to me every time I wore fancy earrings or rolled down my socks before going to school. Because of this, I hated school uniforms as they gave little space for personal style. I'm sure many other teenagers feel the same.
You always had to tie your hair neatly, file your nails and pull up your socks. While school uniforms are necessary as they maintain a sense of equality amongst student, I was the happiest when I tossed my uniform away after my graduation.
“My school uniform totally killed my style and since I spent most of my day wearing them, I had no clue how to dress my body shape. Every time I went out shopping I would be so confused and pick up all the wrong things” said Kanika Sharma from Delhi University.
With college comes new found freedom, which is exiting because you can really begin to figure yourself out and with that develop a unique style too. Your body finally seems like your own. You can dress it, build it and even ink it the way you want. College gives you a fresh start; I wanted my college style to be a reflection of me. Boho chic or punk rock, hipster or khadi clad you can dress how ever you want!
For every student starting college this summer, the two month period before classes begin is completely devoted to the ultimate makeover.
Here are a few things you can look forward to trying as you undergo the school to college style transition.
You don’t have to tie your hair and clip up those fringes any more. You are now free to get those bangs you always wanted. A nice cropped look can also be refreshing. Experiment with highlights, go blonde or burgundy and if you’re feeling a little dare devilish, try purple or green!
That same cropped haircut is boring now. Nobody is stopping you from growing your hair and getting that ‘death metal’ look, or you can spike it up like David Beckham whatever floats your boat. These bearded look also get a thumbs up.
Nose rings never go out of style and belly piercings are fun too! Just don’t go too overboard, you’ll save your dad a heart attack.
With the right kind of stud, an ear or an eyebrow piercing could look very hipster.
3) That hot fit body
It’s time to shed all that weight you gained because of the mid-night snacking during your board exams. Walk into college with a body you feel confident about. Swimming is a great way to lose weight in the summer. You’re sure to shed a few kilos because of all that shopping anyway.
You need a pair of killer heels ASAP. For all your fun nightouts or even for the times you stay in, good shoes are a must. Life is short, your shoes shouldn't be. Kolhapuris are totally in these days; they come in so many colours and are totally affordable.
Get rid of those sloppy chappals and get yourself a smart pair of shoes. You can get those classy leather ones or fun sporty sneakers, whatever matches your style.
Before that shopping trip look at some cool fashion blogs. Pick out styles you like and feel more comfortable in, then shop accordingly. Jeans and tops, kurtas and leggings are passé, try indo-western or boho and turn heads as you walk into college.
If you think there’s not much you can do with your style check out these cool looks. Your favourite band t-shirts, or the ones with cool messages that are in sync with your personality are great too. There are some really cool style blogs for men too, check them out ASAP.
There’s something about ink and college students. “More kids these days want to get inked, especially the ones going off to college. Tattoos make you more comfortable in your skin, it gives you confidence. I think that’s the reason these kids who are starting a whole new chapter in their lives feel the need to get inked.” Says tattoo artist Gaurav Kumar from New Delhi. As exciting as it may seem, you need to be extra careful while getting a tattoo. Start off with something small like the ones below.
Any simple outfit can be turned around with the right accessories. Try wearing some beautiful Indian jewellery with a western outfit for an indo-western look. Jhumkas and Jeans go so well together! Since you’re going to be very busy, you need a watch to keep track of time. Watches make you look all grown up and sophisticated too.
A good pair of sunglasses can give dimension to your face. Pair your kurta with aviators and look totally daabang. Those low hanging jeans are a total faux pas. Buy yourself a stylist brown leather belt and rock’em with your formals. Swap those floppy wristbands for a classy watch, that way you won’t be late for those early first classes.
