We all talk of the deplorable state of our environment and our surroundings, about the difficulties we face and the deteriorating state of safety and health. However, most of us tend to forget about the role we can play to combat these. Getting involved with the community as actively as we can is one way out.

Community is an extension of our social network, respect it: The first step to be involved with the community is to recognise that it is an extension of our own selves and that we need to value and respect it.

It’s all about give and take, value others: Always remember that without reciprocity, nothing and no relationship can work. It is imperative that you value others around you.

Rights come with responsibility: It is easy for all of us to talk about our rights and what others around us and the society owes us. What is more difficult is to also accept and work with the responsibilities that come with these rights. It is only with this understanding that one can involve one’s self with the community and work on aspects that relate to it.

Express your views: Express your views at the right avenue. It is easy to be critical in retrospect and to say behind people’s backs that they made a mistake. What is more essential is talking about what you feel to people who can make a difference.

Take the responsibility for things that are important to you: Every person needs to be committed not just to their own well-being but also towards things that are important to them. Taking responsibility for these things is essential.

Get involved with issues and work: Develop a sense of involvement and responsibility. Start actively working on the things that need to be taken care of according to you.

Help maintain harmony: Try and do things in a manner that helps maintain harmony in the community around you.

Stand up for others: Showing your solidarity and support is integral to working within the community and getting involved with it.

Do not break rules and laws: Working for and with the community entails working in a manner wherein one respects the rules and laws of the community within which one resides.

Be a role model: Demonstrate the things you want to be done and the behaviour you want to be imbibed by people.
