Bharati Singh (name changed) was in for a rude shock when she was denied admission to the course of her choice, History (hons) despite scoring above 72 per cent that was required in the first cut-off at Gargi College. Bharati had studied in Hindi medium school.
“We were told by the college authorities that the medium of instruction in History (hons) is English. However, my daughter was insistent on studying in this college so we admitted her to Hindi (hons),” said Bharati’s father.
Gargi principal Meera Ramchandran said apart from Political Science, no other subject was taught in Hindi in her college. “That is why we do not admit students who have studied in Hindi medium. This is because we do not have the staff and the resources to have separate English and Hindi sections for students. We can do that if the UGC gives us grant.”
While the medium of instruction in Delhi University colleges is predominantly English, all colleges do not deny admission to Hindi medium students. However studying in these colleges is also a very tough task for Hindi medium students, as most colleges do not have separate Hindi sections.
Delhi University norms however allow Hindi medium students to get admission in any course except English (hons).
