With more than eight lakh followers on Instagram and around two lakh likes on Facebook, Hayden Williams has achieved more than some people twice his age could ever dream of. This 22-year-old ­fashion enthusiast recently collaborated with Rimmel London and supermodel Kate Moss for her eye wear ­collection called Idol Eyes. In addition to sketching fashion icons like Naomi Campbell and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Williams ensures his Tumblr and Instagram pages are filled with celebrity stunners like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna and Beyonce, to name a few.
So, what is the reason behind his rising popularity on social media? “It wasn’t planned. It all started with sharing my work online in 2009. Every now and then, I would create sketches of ­celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey etc. My creativity and hard work were noticed when all these ­celebrities shared my work on their social media accounts. In a way, social media has been a great platform for me to share my vision and to become known worldwide.”
This Londoner has been drawing since the tender age of three. Most of his ­inspiration has come from his childhood fascination with Disney movies and their heroines. “As soon as I picked up a pencil or pen, I wanted to draw. I grew up watching Disney movies and I would draw the characters over and over again until I achieved perfection. As I got older, my interests extended to fashion art and design.” Williams’s work is also influenced by vintage fashion editorials and films. “I love the 40s, the late 50s and early 60s. All these eras have such ­classic and timeless moments that I never get tired of ­revisiting them,” he says.
The magic wand that helps him achieve such polished designs is a simple pencil. His toolkit usually consists of just a pencil, fine liner and colour markers. Hayden reveals that it can take as little as 10 to 15 minutes to do a quick sketch. However, one complete design can take around one hour.
Although William had no formal illustrative training, he did go to college and then to university to study fashion design. “I wanted to learn the basics of sewing, constructing ­garments etc, so that I would understand it and also be able to call myself a designer. The difficult part was the ­business aspect. As you become more established, you have to become more business minded and at times, it can be quite a daunting task to balance creativity and business,” he says.
As for his future plans go, he plans to build a brand name one day. “I plan to put together a team and start my own high-end fashion label, and I also want to release a coffee table book with my sketches. I definitely would want to do more collaboration with brands and people. You can be the most talented person, but if you don’t have the drive and ­determination to ­succeed, you will be left behind,” he ­concludes.
