IIM Ahmedabad to train 40 principals

Seems like the Delhi government can't have enough of the IIMs. After screening Munna Bhai MBBS and Rang De Basanti for its schoolteachers on lines of the management school, the government has now decided to send 40 of its principals to IIM Ahmedabad for a special training module.

Seems like the Delhi government can't have enough of the IIMs. After screening Munna Bhai MBBS and Rang De Basanti for its schoolteachers on lines of the management school, the government has now decided to send 40 of its principals to IIM Ahmedabad for a special training module.

Their logic — after all a principal is more of a manager than a teacher. The first batch will leave for Ahmedabad in December during winter vacation for a 10-day module specially being developed for Delhi government school principals.

The bill for the course stands at Rs 25,000 per principal which the Delhi government will foot. The authorities, however, say the expenses are justified.

“The course is part of our greater effort to improve government school education system. The IIMs are doing a study on improving management of education and we decided to take advantage. After all our principals have to act like managers a lot of times,” said Delhi education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.
If the results are encouraging, the government will sign an MoU with the IIM-A to make this an annual feature, say officials. “We want all kind of schools to be represented, not just the best.

It will be a mixed group of Pratibha schools, good and bad ones. The idea is to ensure that all kinds of issues are addressed and solutions identified,” said Delhi education director Vijay Kumar.

And what will the principals study? Modules on leadership, management, group motivation, and inspiration. It goes without saying that going to IIM-A will be a motivation for the principals.

“When they train at the best management institute in the country with the best trainers, it will definitely be an ego boost,” said Kumar.
