IIT satellite college in Pondicherry

Wrapping up a three-day debate on Education Transport on Wednesday, education minister MOHF Shahjahan said the state government, which was keen on promoting computer-based education for all children, planned to equip schools with computers for students from Class IV.

The plan was to have three students to a computer in a batch. He said there would be no marks awarded to students in exams conducted by the department. Grade system would be introduced.

Sports, including martial arts, would be encouraged in schools and colleges. He said the government-run Pondicherry Engineering College would be converted into a Deemed university next year.

On the government’s Information Technology policy, he said a ‘Rajiv Gandhi knowledge village’ would be set up where 140 students would be trained in one batch. Meritious students passing this would have good placements.

International reputed firms and professionals would be requisitioned to offer services, he added. On tourism promotion, he said the government proposed to introduce hovercraft and build up the infrastructure.

A state level university would also be promoted in Pondicherry. Private entrepreneurs intending to start IT related industries would be enabled and encouraged to do so with the government meeting their requirments including all facilities for their promotional activities.

Funds for the departments including Education, have been sanctioned, according to official sources.
