Dinanath Batra, the 85-year-old national president of the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, who is in the midst of a controversy over an alleged attempt to saffronise education, said it is high time the NCERT books are revised.

He also said that NCERT books are making the students directionless, bereft of cultural values and without any goals in life.

“Books are a mode for instilling cultural values. NCERT books have failed to percolate the rich cultural landscape of our country. They are dotted with disgraceful words and distorted history. It is high time the books are revised,” he added.

Unfazed by criticism, Batra said: “Even UNESCO has said that a country should be rooted to its culture and wedded to its growth. What wrong have I said? I actually like all those who are critical of me.”

Batra was responsible for the pulping of American scholar Wendy Doniger’s book on Hinduism.

Maintaining that education should be strongly knitted to culture, he said: “The universities should adopt 7-8 villages. Likewise the schools should also take up social service.”

Batra also stressed on the need to revisit and re-look at all the major educational organisations.
