On January 1, 1981, Mother Theresa inaugurated the St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce.
In an area that is reminiscent of the quaint villages of Goa, the college was started when Archbishop Simon Pimenta felt the need for a new catholic college in the suburbs that would offer courses like BA, BCom and BSc.
The first phase of the construction of 18 classrooms was completed in June 1986 and solemnly blessed on St. Andrew’s Feast Day, 30 November 1986.
Subsequently, the chapel, the library, the administrative block, the students' common rooms were constructed. Since more rooms were required two new floors with 18 classrooms were added in 2002.
The latest addition is the annexe, which was completed in the Jubilee Year 2007-08.
The college offers course in Bachelors of Arts, Bachelors of Science, and Bachelors of Commerce, along with BMS (Bachelors of Management Studies) and BMM (Bachelors of Mass Media).
The BA and BMM departments are specially known for their experienced faculty. Approximately 30,000 books are organised subject wise according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System in the college library. It also has a counselling as well as a placement cell. There is a chapel where mass is held on the first Friday of every month.
Infrastructure and other facilities
The college has a basketball court, hockey field and a football field. Just two years ago, a new, bigger and airier canteen, called Café Andre was set up.
The college students are known for their talent in music and dance. They have two annual inter collegiate festivals. Olio is a dramatic inter-college festival.
In tune is a music festival, which takes place in the month of September.
St Andrew’s College houses the St. Andrew’s Auditorium, which is used not only for college events but other functions, cultural shows and plays as well.
