The new textbooks prepared by NCERT in the light of the National Curriculum Framework (2005) are now ready for release. In the first phase, new textbooks will be introduced in CBSE-affiliated schools in classes I, III, VI, IX and XI.

These will be formally released by Arjun Singh, Minister of Human Resource Development, on April 5. Textbooks which have been in use in the remaining classes (classes II, IV, V, VII, VIII, X and XII) will continue.

National Curriculum Framework gives the highest priority to activity-based learning, reducing curricular burden and examination stress and linking children’s life at school with their experiences at home.

The new class III EVS textbook titled Looking Around, signifies the importance of encouraging children to explore and make sense of their natural and social surroundings. The new language textbooks incorporate workbook material, and provide opportunities to relate to India’s multilingual environment. Sensitivity towards the disabled is reflected in different subject areas.

Textbooks in the social sciences attempt to provide exposure to India’s democratic society and Constitutional values with the help of examples drawn from real-life stories.

A serious attempt has been made to provide interdisciplinary linkages, with the goal of giving children a chance to understand different topics and issues, rather than merely memorise information.
