About the institution: The School of Open Learning (SOL), a part of the Campus of Open Learning, was formerly known as the School of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education. Created under the University of Delhi in 1962, it is a pioneer distance education in India. SOL offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in humanities and commerce. Classes are held on Saturdays, Sundays and other gazetted holidays.
The university’s External Students’ Cell, which was launched to provide educational opportunities to students from low-income groups who could not make it to DU colleges due to the admission criteria, was merged with SOL in 2009. The school attracts learners from different sections of society and 1.25 lakh were enrolled on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 2009-2010.
Programmes on offer: BA programme; BA (H) English; BA (H) political science; BCom programme; BCom (H); MA in Sanskrit, Hindi, history and political science and MCom.
Fees range: Undergraduate - R3000 to R3200 a year; postgraduate - R4500 to R5000 a year.
Support systems/ facilities for students: SOL boasts a well-stocked library. The faculty of each department conducts personal contact exercises to address students’ concerns. The school also runs an SMS Sewa through which updates regarding admissions, admit cards, results, etc are forwarded to students’ cell phones.
Total no. and list of study centres: Besides its North Campus centre, SOL has a South Study Centre at South Moti Bagh, Old Moti Lal Nehru College Building, New Delhi - 110021. Classes are held on Sundays and gazetted holidays in 18 colleges of Delhi University in both North and South Campus.
Enrolment: Admissions start in June for undergraduate courses and in August-September for postgraduate courses.
