DG Ruparel College, of Arts, Science and Commerce, located in Matunga (west) was established in 1952 by the Modern Education Society, Pune. The college holds a place of pride on the list of the most sought-after colleges in Mumbai. This college offers Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and BSc IT. It also offers courses at the postgraduate level such as MSc computer science, MSc IT, and MCom. However, the college is best known for its science faculty and excellent teaching. A good number of Ruparel students have gone on to become scientists in leading institutions. It is considered to be one of the premier colleges for the science stream in Mumbai. The college boasts of a vast green campus and a well-stocked library. The college has been reaccredited with ‘A’ grade by the NAAC. The college is culturally very vibrant. The theatre club is popular and many students have gone on to become famous artists in the entertainment industry. The college has very good sports facilities and a lot of Ruparel students have made a mark in sports competitions at the state and national levels. The college gives equal importance to academics as well as extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, thereby ensuring that graduating students possess well-rounded personalities and not just good grades. This year 41 students secured over 90% in the science stream in HSC.
The college is well-equipped with a computer-aided library. D.G. Ruparel College has a very active botany and zoological department. For sports, the college has a ground for football and cricket. The college has teams that represent it in kabbaddi, basketball, boxing and badminton up to the national level.
Cells and Clubs
There is an NCC as well as an NSS wing that organises educational and community service programmes. There is a placement cell, and a counselling cell that has opened up recently.
The inter-collegiate annual festival of Ruparel college is ‘Kshitij’ — held in December. There are various activity clubs, such as a photography club, a nature club, a dramatics club, ‘Chitraved’ — a movie screening club, ‘Polis’ — a political science club, etc. The Marathi one-act plays at the fest are very popular.D G Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce was established in 1952 by the Modern Education Society, Pune. Various Vocational Courses were introduced at + 2 stage in the year 1980. From 1980 – 81, University of Mumbai accorded its sanction to the graduate classes in faculty of Commerce. In addition to these classes under University of Mumbai the college is a centre for conducting the classes of graduate courses under the Institute of Distance Education of University of Mumbai.
