Scholarships for science students

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) announced scholarships for the current year recently. Meant for students interested in research, the scholarship amount ranges between R4,000 and R7,000, depending on the category of student. The scholarship is funded by the Department of Science and Technology and is run in collaboration with IIT Bombay and the Indian Council of Medical Research. Anyone studying in Class XI, XII, first or second year of under graduation in basic sciences/ MBBS can apply.
The various categories are as follows:
Students enrolled in Class XI come under this category. One must have got a minimum of 75 per cent in maths and science subjects in the Class X Board exams.
This category covers all students studying in Class XII and aspiring to join an undergraduate programme in basic sciences. To be eligible, one must have scored a minimum of 75 per cent in maths and science subjects in the Class X Board exams.
All undergraduate basic science students come under this category. Applicants must have scored a minimum of 60 per cent marks in aggregate in science subjects in Class XII Board examinations.
Stream SP (Medicine)
MBBS students intending to do a project fall under this category. They will need to join in the first or the second professional year. Students must have passed Class XIII Board examinations with 75 per cent marks aggregate in science subjects or passed first professional year with not less than 60 per cent. A copy of the bio-medical research project is required along with the application.
Stream SP (basic sciences)
Students keen to undertake a project and enrolled in Class XI or XII, or first or second year of BSc /BS/Int MSc) in basic sciences and first or second year of BE/BTech/ BArch during the academic year 2010-2011 and have secured a minimum of 60 per cent aggregate marks in Class X and XII Board examinations are eligible under this category. Students enrolled in the second year must have secured a minimum of 60 per cent marks in the first year examination.
In all the above categories, 10 per cent relaxation will be given to the SC/ST category.
SP (basic sciences) and SP (medicine): Each KVPY applicant is required to submit a project report, chosen and executed by the candidate exclusively for this application. Projects done jointly with other candidates will not be considered. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of the application form, short-listed candidates will be called for an interview, the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted at IISc, Bangalore in December 2010 or January 2011.
Basic sciences: After scrutiny of application forms and based on the performance in the Board Examination(s), all the eligible candidates will have to appear for a written aptitude test (conducted both in Hindi and English). The test will be conducted at different centers across the country on October 31. The details of the venue of the aptitude tests will be put up on the KVPY website in October.
The last date for accepting online applications for all categories is September 9.
