What is common among Sarvesh Mehtani, who scored AIR 1 in JEE (Advanced), Aashish Waikar, who got AIR 7, and Manthan Jindal, who got AIR 32? Besides featuring in the toppers’ list across the country, the three are this year’s pass-outs from the same school, ie Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula. The school stunned everyone as the trio brought laurels to the school in the JEE (Advanced) results declared on Sunday.

Amid rising curiosity over school’s overall role in producing these toppers, principal Gulshan Kaur said that it was the result of focused classroom teaching that is orienting students for board as well as competitive exams.

She said that there is a lot of syllabus common between Class 12 board exams and JEE, which is based on NCERT books. The only difference between them is that board exams are theoretical and subjective, while competitive exams are objective and demand quick reaction time.

“Keeping this in mind, our teachers in classrooms worked very well on different formats during regular sessions. The classroom focus was more on conceptual understanding of topics and its applications since these things are made clear to students, cracking any exam becomes easier,” she explained.

She further added that the school was also fortunate to have bright students who remained regular and attentive in classroom teachings; although there is no doubt that they also honed their skills in competitive exams in private coaching centres.

“But our overall focus was to orient them properly. For this, teachers had a huge role to play as they also took special classes of students whenever they had doubts,” said Kaur.

School’s secretary, Kulbhushan Goyal, said that in previous years, their top ranker had AIR 92. With three this time in top ranking, it means that their overall teaching has made impact on their overall performance.

Sarvesh Mehtani also added that there was proper coverage of NCERT books in the school along with practical training, which is not generally possible in private coaching centres. “These two factors played an important role in my preparation,” he added.

BOARD RESULTS NOT SO BRIGHT

Though the school hasn’t produced tricty toppers in board exam results this year in arts, commerce and non-medical, in Class-12 board exams of medical stream, its student, Kaashvi, topped in the country with 98.4% marks. The school hopes that she will do well in NEET and other medical competitive exams, results of which will come soon.
