The show cause notice issued to a PhD student of Jamia Millia Islamia for allegedly giving misleading accounts of the university’s issues to a media organisation was withdrawn on Wednesday.
A letter signed by chief proctor Mehtab Alam stated, “The response was examined by the proctorial department and the office of Dean Students Welfare and was found satisfactory. Hence, the show cause notice is hereby withdrawn.”
In June, Imran spoke to a media organisation about the lack of chairs and waterlogging near hostel campus due to which students were allegedly facing problems commuting.

Imran claimed that he first raised these issues with university authorities. Since no steps were taken, he took it to the media. The university had said that what he had done was in gross violation of the Jamia’s rules and regulations.
On Wednesday, the students protested at the central canteen demanding the withdrawal of the notice and against “witch hunting of students”. Imran and a few others had also threatened to sit on hunger strike if the notice was not withdrawn.
The notice sent on Tuesday by chief proctor Mehtab Alam said, “It has been reported that you have given a statement… that there was a shortage of chairs in Jamia library room. Again… you have put allegations on Jamia administration that Jamia hostel campus is flooded with water and administration is coolly sleeping”.
The notice also said that, “such irresponsible behaviour of yours of giving misleading accounts amounts to unbecoming a PhD student of Jamia Millia Islamia”.
