The Central Board of Secondary Examination’s (CBSE) Class 12 mathematics exam on Monday left students in tears, with most of them claiming they couldn’t complete it on time as it was lengthy.
About 40% of the questions in the paper were tricky and most students found it difficult to solve, said a teacher from Presidium School, Ashok Vihar.
“Unlike last year, this year’s paper had questions from NCERT. But maximum questions were from outside NCERT and students found it difficult,” said Ashok Garg, Mathematics teacher at the school.
He said questions were not only tricky but also required elaborate steps. “Most students looked very unhappy while leaving the examination hall,” said
Students said they couldn’t answer questions for 10-15 marks.
“I left two questions as the paper was very lengthy. It required time to understand each of the questions and had to perform elaborate calculations. The three hours’ time for the paper was not enough,” said Shouray Duggal, a student of Presidium School, Ashok Vihar.
It was mostly the problems from integration and differential matrix questions that caused a fit among students. Eshaa Patel, a student from Delhi Public School, RK Puram, said she couldn’t answer for eight marks.
“The one-mark questions required us to write elaborately, so most of the time got spent there. Few of my friends left questions with more than 15-mark weightage,” said Patel.
Teachers also call it a moderate paper for average students.
“Scoring a 100 this time will be very difficult even for good students. Even those who completed the paper, they did not have time to revise which is important for subjects such as mathematics,” said Jyoti Arora, principal Mount Abu Public School, Rohini.
As most children returned home disappointed, parents are worried that this might affect the children’s confidence.
“At this time, when even 0.5% marks matter. Now with such difficult paper what is going to happen to our children? The board should take cognisance of this matter and initiate corrective measure,” said a parent, who did not want to be named.
