Established in 2002, the Centre for Distance and Open Learning (CDOL) runs 21 programmes approved by joint committee of DEC, AICTE, UGC/NCTE. “In today’s time, education is the most empowering force. Unfortunately, our country does not have the infrastructure required to offer quality education to all. For those who are unable to get admission in regular courses because of various reasons which may be financial or logistic or academic, distance education acts as a bridge to help them overcome these hurdles,” says Mirza Tariq Beg, director, Centre for Distance and Open Learning.

The centre, approved by ministry of human resource development, government of India, “offers students a chance to get quality education which is considered at par with the regular mode of learning. Also, high standards are maintained for examination and evaluation process. Unlike the distance mode courses offered by various other universities, CDOL has built a reputation which is unparalleled. Most of our students are placed in good companies and are able to build a stable career,” says Beg.

CODL has established 31 study/programme centres. These centres are located at various places in UP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Orissa and Maharashtra. The mode of transaction is through self-learning print material which contains both theory and practical components, supplemented by audio and video programmes, counselling sessions with qualified and experienced faculty and a wide range of student support services. Also, the centre has recently launched an SMS alert service, wherein a student gets connected with the centre by receiving/sending messages. Students get messages about academic activities related to his/her programme.

Jamia Millia Islamia will open its admission window for distance learning courses on June 15, 2014. The centre offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate diploma courses in English, political science, sociology, human resources management, public administration, international business and finance, geoinformatics, etc. There are entrance tests for a few programmes like BEd, diploma in electrical engineering and diploma in power generation engineering.

BEd, BCom, MA in human resource management, postgraduate diploma in geo-informatics, postgraduate diploma in guidance and counselling (PGDGC) are some of the popular ones. Fee range is from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 30,000 for all the courses.

“Despite the infrastructural capacity of the study centres, there is no limit to the number of admissions. Since CDOL has almost doubled the number of study centres, it may be said that the number of seats have also doubled. Last year, about 6000 students applied. We expect this number to increase to 10,000 this year,” says Beg.

The centre also runs an Urdu certificate course. The purpose is to teach Urdu by means of different languages (English and Hindi) through distance mode. The certificate programme is offered free of cost. However, the candidate needs to pay Rs. 100 by post for the dispatch of books and correspondence. No specific entrance qualifications or experience are required for admission to this course but applicants should have knowledge of Hindi or English, the language of instruction.
