Summer jobs are not about earning mega bucks. The buzzword is ‘exposure’. So unlike before, GenNext is making a beeline for media and publishing houses and NGOs to get hands-on experience.
“I am learning so much from the research I am doing on the soft drinks industry. It will help me more than working in a fast food joint where I can make good money,” says Siddharth Vij, who appeared for his Class XII exams.
Vij is associated with Tehelka Foundation as a voluntary coordinator. For Aesha Datta, a Hindu College student, the idea of working in the print media was fascinating, as it involved meeting new people and improving communication skills.
“Money doesn’t count when you get to learn so much,” says Datta who is soon going to assist Wildlife SOS with her research inputs. They do a gruelling 9 to 5 shift, six days a week, sans complaints.
For most youngsters these jobs are about building profiles. “By the time I am out of college, I will have experience. This will look good on my CV,” says Nidhi Singal of LSR College. Indeed!
