This time the Teachers' Day, celebrated on September 5 every year, will turn green in Uttar Pradesh, with teachers planting saplings on college campuses.

A high-level meeting of principals of degree colleges of six districts took the decision. R.L. Kushwaha, the regional higher education officer, presided over the meeting.

Launched at the initiative of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, orders for greening of all the colleges across the state, including private and self financed institutions, have been issued by the chief secretary.

College principals have been given the responsibility to implement the programme. In Agra division, the target is to plant 100,000 saplings.

The guidelines issued expect every teacher and non-teaching employee to plant at least one sapling. Students and parents too can join the campaign.

Plants should be between four to 12 feet high. The officials made it clear that a complete report on the implementation of the programme has to be submitted to the chief minister Sep 7.

The forest department has been asked to provide the support services, including plants of the required size.
