Concerned over the lack of elaborate courses on policing and internal security in more than 279 universities in the country, the Union Home Ministry is going to set up its own university called the National Police University (NPU) which will offer courses in various aspects of policing and security at the graduate, postgraduate and the doctorate level.

The three-year graduation degree course will be offered after 10+2 level and primarily deal with terrorism, organised crime, economic crime, cyber crime, public order, VIP security and other issues. The two-year Masters programme will be in Police Sciences. The university will also offer MPhil and PhD programmes for higher and advanced research related to policing.

“There are 22 lakh police personnel involved in law and order and internal security duties in India. But surprisingly, no university offers any course on policing which is a highly specialised work.

So MHA has now initiated the process of setting up its own university,” a senior ministry official said. The NPU will be totally funded by the Home Ministry. Graduates from the Police University will also be given preference for placement in police and central para-military forces.

The Ministry is looking at Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune as the possible locations for the proposed university though Hyderabad is said to have an edge since the National Police Academy is already functioning there.

The University will also organise specialised training programmes for senior police officers on the pattern of the National Defence College courses for Army top brass.

The University will have a research, development and innovation wing with state-of-the-art facilities. The idea is to make NPU a think-tank of the government providing all material on policing and internal security. The NPU will interact with similar Police Universities across the world.
