Where business gets global

IIFT has a strong focus on international business, finance, marketing and trade with a global perspective

For Bangalore student Vikram Raghupathy, joining an institute with excellent learning opportunities was very important. “I did my schooling in Bangalore, after which I completed my BTech in electronics and communication engineering from the National Institute of Technology Surathkal, Karnataka. I then worked for a year with Samsung and went on to try my luck at entrepreneurship,” he says. He started his search for a b-school that would teach him the best business practices and also expose him to the world of international business. After doing a thorough research for prospective institutions, Raghupathy zeroed in on the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi.

“In this globalised world, it is extremely important for every individual to be equipped with the skill sets that would help him/her to excel. So far, the journey at IIFT has been extremely fruitful. The faculty is fantastic and the opportunities to learn are immense. All the activities here are student driven, so even the juniors get to shoulder a lot of responsibility,” says Raghupathy, a student of the MBA (international business) programme.

Apart from providing academic training, the institute also offers global exposure to its students. “Every year, students are selected to take part in exchange programmes with renowned universities worldwide. This offers a very good opportunity to gain transcultural exposure and a student spends his third trimester abroad,” says RK Mitra, registrar.

USP: “The institute has trained more than 40,000 business professionals in various facets of international business and trade policy through its management development programmes. A strong research base in economics and world trade and extensive industry-academia link are other unique aspects of the institute,” says Mitra.

Programmes: On-campus programmes are MBA in international business - full-time and part-time. IIFT also offers management development programmes of varying duration on a regular basis. Besides, it offers postgraduate diploma in international business; executive post graduate diploma in industrial marketing; executive postgraduate diploma in capital and financial markets, certificate in export management; certificate in international business language; certificate in global trade logistics and operations; and PhD part-time and full-time. The institute also offers various off-campus courses.

Faculty: There are 61 faculty members at IIFT Delhi and Kolkata

IT quotient: Recognising the importance of technology in education, IIFT's computer centre has been set up with state-of-the-art infrastructure. It facilitates storage management, hardware, network operations, streamlining operations and simplifies end-user support. The campus is WiFi-enabled and is equipped with facilities such as high-capacity 14 mbps Internet connectivity, video conferencing and virtual classrooms.

Infrastructure: Located in the Qutab Institutional Area close to Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Indian Institute of Technology, IIFT is spread over six acres of land and overlooks the green ridge and the historical Qutab Minar. This provides a great environment for studies. The facilities available on campus include centrally air-conditioned lecture halls with modern audio-visual aids, conference halls for round-table conferences, an auditorium of 500 seating capacity, MDP centre, three computer centres, indoor games and excellent residential facilities for students.

The MBA (international business) is a fully residential programme. There is a separate wing for girl students. Computers are provided in every hostel room with Internet connectivity. The institute also has residential facilities for participants of its management development programmes.

IIFT’s library has around 84,000 volumes of books and subscriptions to 800 journals with complete online cataloguing. Besides being an invaluable place of reference for industry, research scholars and students alike, the library has a unique collection of publications of organisations such as Food and Agriculture Organisation, International Monetary Fund, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, World Bank, and other international agencies.

IIFT has set up the WTO Resource Centre in the library to focus exclusively on WTO issues. “The centre is the only one of its kind in India, which enhances the utility of the IIFT library,” says Mitra.

Clubs and societies: Some of the clubs are: Blash, which provides a platform for students to learn and discuss about various facets of trade and international business; Brandwagon — a forum of students that are interested in marketing, either as a subject or as a preferred career; Cash-O-Nova, a club that acts as a platform for discussion and activities in the field of finance; Quintessential, a quizzing club; and Koshish, a CSR club etc. Students of MBA (IB) course come up with several monthly magazines, including: Trade Winds and Markmantra.
