Former super cop and Jamshedpur MP Ajoy Kumar is engaged in a poll battle to defend his seat. But apart from the election results, he has one more thing to look forward to — a film based on him.
Kumar's battles against organised crime, corporate challenges and water scarcity in rural hinterlands of East Singhbhum may soon be a part of Bollywood folklore.
Randeep Hooda of Murder 3 and Highway fame will play Kumar in the untitled movie to be directed by Prawaal Raman, who has also directed Gayab, Darna Mana Hai and Darna Zaroori Hai, 404 and others.
"We signed Randeep for Dr Ajoy's character on Sunday. It's a biopic that would try to capture his life and his indomitable winning spirit," Raman, who conceptualised the film, told HT on Tuesday from Mumbai.
He said the script was ready and the rest of the cast will be finalised within the next fortnight. The shooting will begin in October and the film should be ready by December, he said.
"When I heard Dr Ajoy's story from Prawaal I realised how it needs to be told immediately. It's extremely relevant… be the change that you wish to see in the world," Hooda told HT over phone.
"The movie will depict the heroic journey of a man who has donned many caps and has always served people against all odds. As an actor, it's a rare opportunity to get a chance to play many roles while enacting a single character," Hooda said.
Raman, a Loyola School alumnus, said he would have loved to be in Jamshedpur during the polls, but he was busy with the post-production process of his next film, Main Aur Charles, based on Tihar jailbreak by Charles Shobhraj. This film will hit the theatres by September.
"I know Dr Ajoy since my college days when he rid the city of the mafia gangs and daily daylight shootouts as then Jamshedpur superintendent of police. He was such a daring, dynamic and clean police officer. Yet he left the IPS cadre and successfully donned the corporate cap. As a politician too, he has set benchmarks," said Raman.
Asked if his film would also focus on human rights cases against Kumar, Raman said crime also fights back when you fight it.
"It is but natural that cases are against him but my film will seek to put it in the right perspective. Our film will focus on Dr Ajoy's special relationship with his better half Reena Arya," said Raman.
