A day after actor Nagma was mobbed at an election meeting and she allegedly slapped a youth for misbehaving with her, the police Friday said they had increased the security of the Congress candidate.
Mohammad Imran, vice-president of district Congress committee, who organised the poll meet at the Jali Kothi area on Thursday, said “our rival parties are responsible for the ruckus as they are scared of the growing popularity of Nagma”.
A huge crowd had gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor on Thursday night. Meanwhile, some youths tried to get closer to Nagma and one of them allegedly attempted to hold her hand. “Sensing mischief, Nagma pushed him back and slapped him,” said Imran. Soon her supporters led her away.
Meerut Congress president Salim Bharti, however, dismissed the slapping incident. He said people were coming out in support of the Congress candidate and commotion in such situations was normal. Meanwhile, SSP Omkar Singh ordered an additional gunner for the actor and advised her to inform the magistrate and the concerned police station well before her election meetings. Former MLA Rajendra Sharma also condemned the administration and police for making insufficient security arrangement for a star campaigner.
