When BJP supporters circulated posters wrongly quoting whistleblower Julian Assange as saying "America is scared of Modi because he is incorruptible", little did they know the move would kick up a storm.

In a series of tweets on Monday, WikiLeaks denied calling the BJP prime ministerial candidate incorruptible. They went on to tweet aggressively about how 'Narenda Modi's BJP' was 'pushing the fake #Modi endorsement'.

The incident caught the best of social media's imagination. All sorts of 'endorsements' did the rounds on Twitter and Facebook and the incident took the face of viral memes. Sample these:

Much to the amusement of many, most of the jokes were not even remotely connected to politics.

Touching a range of topics from Alok Nath to Iodex, the memes were obscure and hilarious — all at the same time.

As if these weren't enough, someone decided to create a whole thread on Tumblr dedicated to these endorsements.

From digs at Modi to smart and hilarious puns, the thread managed to become quite the rage with many 'endorsing' it on Facebook and Twitter. Take a look at a few memes from the thread:

Though Modi hasn't commented on the incident yet, the BJP chose to pull a serious face amid the gags.

Senior party leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Monday said Modi did not need a certificate from Julian Assange or Wikileaks to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

For the internet, it looks like the laugh riot has just begun.
