The BJP’s South Delhi candidate, Ramesh Bidhuri, has learnt that reaching out to the public can be a poll winner. So besides going from door to door himself, he is meeting BJP workers and supporters across his constituency and urging them to form teams and meet each voter on his behalf.
The teams have been tasked with steering voters away from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
On Tuesday, Bidhuri travelled through the crooked lanes of Deoli, Tigri and Sangam Vihar to make some promises of his own. Seated in the front in his ‘personal’ Scorpio car, he moved to Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj to tell his loyalists how they should get hold of voters and convince them about the AAP’s follies.
He customised his address to the workers according to the location. At some places, his target was the Congress and at others, the Congress. From a sitting Tughlaqabad MLA to an aspiring MP, Bidhuri was careful as he touched upon local as well as national issues in the same breath.
“We have to go door to door to tell people that Narendra Modi belongs to the same legacy as Atalji. I want you to get a pledge signed by people. If they say they are committed to AAP, tell them how the party had made only fake promises,” Bidhuri told workers at Vasant Kunj.
He distributed copies of a sankalp patra that the willing voters can sign to pledge their votes to the BJP. “We were over-confident in the Assembly election. We thought people had no other alternative to the Congress. This is how anarchists came to power. We have to stop this,” he added.
The workers had got 100 pledges signed across 34 polling booths in Mehrauli by Tuesday evening.
Bidhuri said that if the public wanted to give an ‘honesty certificate’ to someone, it should be him. “I have spent 10 years as an MLA. And there is no way anyone can prove me corrupt. But how can anyone assure that Arvind Kejriwal is not corrupt? He did not even get a chance,” he said as the audience clapped.
South Delhi Parliamentary constituency contains 10 assembly constituencies, seven of which have BJP MLAs. However, the Congress is known to have a stronghold on the Lok Sabha seat as most of the areas fall under the erstwhile Outer Delhi constituency. He tailored his speech at those areas to promise water and basic facilities like sewage and roads.
