In an oblique reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said the saffron party's only goal is to grab the Prime Minister's chair adding it is misleading the people of the country.

She was speaking at an election rally in Haryana's Mewat.

"These days BJP leaders are changing their disguise and shedding crocodile tears," the Congress president said.

She enumerated the work done by the Congress party-led UPA government and accused the Opposition party of making large claims.

"The history of Congress and the work we have done for you is in front of you," she told the gathering.

She said the progress made under Prime Minister Manmohan in the last 10 years hasn't been seen in any non-Congress government.

"BJP trying to hide their dark deeds," she said.

The UPA chairperson said the 2014 election is not just about social sector schemes and reforms, "it's about preserving our democratic structure".

She said her party will ensure key safeguards for farmers in Haryana adding "Congress has promised that all landless farmers and poor will get houses."

"We don't want an India where only a select few progress and have rights. We will fight for an India which is secular, which belongs to all."

She added the Congress doesn't believe in dividing people based on their language, caste or creed and urged people to vote for her party.
