The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said senior leader Uma Bharti would fight from Jhansi, but did not announce its pick to take on Congress president Sonia Gandhi at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Amid talks of a possible Bharti versus Gandhi fight doing the rounds, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "As far as Uma Bharti is concerned, she will contest from Jhansi."

According to news agency PTI, Bharti informed BJP president Rajnath Singh that she was not willing to leave Jhansi but would accept the party's decision if it fielded her from Rae Bareli, a traditional stronghold of the Congress party.

Some media reports also said Bharti could follow in the footsteps of BJP's prime minister nominee, Narendra Modi, and fight from two seats.

Bharti wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter that she thanked yoga guru Ramdev, who had urged the BJP two days ago to field her from Rae Bareli, and BJP president Rajnath Sigh for their proposal.

Bharti told them that she could not leave Jhansi, for which she has already got a BJP ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

According to a PTI tweet around 4pm, the BJP was likely to pick its candidates from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's seat, Amethi, and Rae Bareli soon. But the announcement did not come till the filing of the report.

Earlier in the day, Trivedi said, "We will put formidable candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli."

His statement fuelled the speculations about another big-ticket fight in UP, which will see Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal taking on Modi from Varanasi.

Meanwhile, there is a big talk that the BJP might field TV actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani from Amethi, which also has AAP's Kumar Vishwas in the fray.
