The anti-incumbency wave against the Congress might be substantial in Gurgaon right now, but party president and UPA-2 chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s rally at Nuh in Mewat on Monday will, if not anything else, put the campaign bandwagon in Gurgaon in fifth gear.

The region, which is primarily Muslim-dominated, has been a Congress bastion and is believed to be particularly close to Sonia’s heart — it would be her fifth visit here in the past decade.

According to local people, Sonia is likely to address two major issues that the district is demanding for years and which might fast-track local development and growth — railway connectivity from Gurgaon and Delhi, and a university for the district.

“The university is required badly here and it will expedite growth in terms of literacy, whereas the railway line connectivity will put development on fast track,” said Mehtab Ahmed, a senior Congress leader of the district.

Mewat this time will witness a tough fight between the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) with its candidate Zakir Hussain sure to cash in on the “local lad” and minority cards.
