Just two weeks from election day, the Trinamool Congress’ candidate for the New Delhi seat, Biswajit Deb Chatterjee, is still unaware about the problems and demands of the people of his constituency.

But the 78-year-old veteran film actor is still confident about winning. He believes his fame as a film actor and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s popularity among Delhiites will garner votes for him.

“I know it’s high time for me to go to the constituency. I am, however, receiving overwhelming support from lots of people here. I am now socialising and will soon start going to the constituency,” Chatterjee said during a chat with HT.

According to him, he would get a feel of the people’s problems to some extent when he will start going to the constituency and fully, after he goes to Parliament.
“Some people told me that poor water supply and problems related to frequent power cuts are two prime issues in the New Delhi constituency. There might be some more issues, which I am not aware of. But I will genuinely try to resolve these when I go to Parliament,” Chatterjee said.

The New Delhi Parliamentary constituency — that has 10 assembly constituencies including Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar, RK Puram, Greater Kailash and Malviya Nagar among others — has over 15 lakh voters.

According to Chatterjee, lakhs of Delhiites have already experienced governments led by the Congress, BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party. “In his constituency, there are at least 10 lakh floating voters, who may vote for Biswajit da,” said an aide of Chatterjee. Chatterjee, while agreeing with the logic, however, admitted that he did not know much about his rivals —Meenakshi Lekhi of BJP, Ajay Maken of Congress and Ashish Khetan of AAP nor their strengths and weaknesses.

“I am sure that I will face lots of googlies (from them). Whatever is the result of the polls, I will remain happy and grateful to Didi for offering to let me contest from the most prestigious seat in the country.”

He is keen to get his superstar son Prasenjit and TMC candidate from Bengal Mithun Chakraborty to come and seek votes for him.

Asked if support withdrawal by Anna Hazare from his party caused damage to it, Chatterjee preferred not to comment.
