Kavuru Sambasiva Rao, 63, who became union cabinet minister for textiles in June 2013, resigned on Thursday in protest against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Though, he has not yet decided whether to quit the Congress he will not fight the upcoming general elections. The five-time MP tells Saubhadra Chatterji the Congress will not get a single seat in Seemandhra region..

Did you resign because the Congress is in a bad shape in Seemandhra.

No. I always had differences of opinion with many cabinet ministers over the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh but I fought to get benefits for Seemandhra.I waited for the Centre to take concrete action and ensure development in Seemandhra. But it has failed to do that.

Are you going to join the Bharatiya Janata Party?

I have not decided anything yet. But I will be in Delhi for the next few days to decide on the future

What is your opinion on BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi?

He has shown a good performance in Gujarat. In industrialisation and also in agriculture he has substantial achievement.  The results are proof of his efforts.

What is your prediction about the Congress in Seemandhra?

It will get zero out of the 25 seats. The BJP-TDP combination has a much better advantage. In various states and not just in Seemandhra, Rahul Gandhi’s policies are not showing any result.

Union minister Jairam Ramesh says you are only trying to protect your family’s business interest.

People like Jairam Ramesh have no idea about the ground reality and never contested elections but Sonia Gandhi (Congress president) is promoting them. I stood by Sonia Gandhi and opposed the then prime minister PV Narsimha Rao, if I had been so concerned about my business, I would not have antagonised the then prime minister. Why can’t Ramesh contest the poll if he understands the situation so well?
