Dismissing the 'Modi wave' as propaganda, union power minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday cautioned people not to be misled by it.

Addressing a rally at Baharia here to seek votes for cricketer-turned-politician Mohd Kaif, the Congress candidate from Phulpur, Scindia accused the opposition of doing the politics of religion and caste.

Attacking "parties that were bent upon dividing the nation", he said the country would suffer if the people voted for the BJP, which he termed the most communal party.

Taking a pot shot at senior BJP leader Uma Bharti, he said she had been imported to UP by her party to garner votes in the name of religion. Bharti is the BJP candidate for the Jhansi Lok Sabha seat which went to the polls on April 30.

Asserting that the Congress-led UPA would once again form the government at the centre, Scindia assured people that it would work for the youth, farmers and the unemployed.

The Congress, he said, had a pan-India outlook and never practised the politics of caste and religion.

He appealed to people of Phulpur to vote for Mohd Kaif who, he said, would work for the development of the area.

Scindia also attacked both the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, labelling them as parties that had been involved in looting the people. People, he said, were now fed up with the policies of these two parties and would vote for the UPA.

Phulpur and its twin constituency Allahabad go to the polls on May 7.
