The city’s six sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) are not rooted in the real issues of the city and have performed and utilised their funds much at variance of their roles and functions, indicated a report released by the Praja Foundation, a nongovernment organisation, on Tuesday.

Out of the 2,224 questions asked collectively in Parliament by all the six MPs in the past five years, only 23 were related to the suburban rail transport in the city and only six were about railway accidents. On an average, 3,500 accidents involving commuters travelling in local trains are registered every year.

Another major finding of the analysis was that despite the 26/11 terror attacks in the city, the issue of increasing coastal security in the city was not the focus point of MPs.

Only six questions were asked on naval defence and only ten were on the subject of terror attacks in the past five years in the city.

“The primary role of the MPs is to raise issues on railways, defence, foreign affairs, finance etc. But they have failed to do so. Though they have the right to talk on any subject, they should deliberately pay attention to these,” said Milind Mhaske, project director, Praja Foundation.

An analysis of the MPLADS fund utilisation also shows that 24.9% of the total average of 49.8% utilised by the MPs was spent on construction of toilets.

Also, only Rs. 56.8 crore of the total Rs. 114 crore allocated to them were spent – a majority of which were on civic issues that fall under the purview of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
