Pune on Thursday recorded 58.5% voter turnout, 18% more than what it saw in 2009. But, complaints of deletion of names from voter list left many disappointed.

According to election commission officials, around 10.63 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise till 6pm.

BJP candidate Anil Shirole and MNS nominee Deepak Paigude are up against Congress' Vishwajit Kadam in Pune.

The absence of three-time parliamentarian Suresh Kalamadi  has left the field open.

Shirole said around one lakh people could not vote since their names were not in the list. “It’s a deliberate attempt by the (ruling) Congress-NCP (combine).”

Actor-director Amol Palekar and his wife Sandhya Gokhale, and musician Salil Kulkarni were among those who found their names were missing and returned home without voting.

Denied the tight to vote, many gathered at the district administration office. Shirole and Aam Aadmi Party nominee Subash Ware threatened to go on fast from Friday and demanded a re-poll after correction in the list.

Angry protesters also gheraoed district collector Saurabh Rao, demanding immediate correction in the electoral roll.

“I have already informed EC observers about the complaints regarding missing names. The EC has asked me to submit a detailed report by tomorrow (Friday),” said Rao.

When asked how many names were missing, Rao said the administration would verify and then make public the number.

He also requested protesters to submit their complaints in writing.

Pritha Kulkarni, 30, said, “I came here to vote after dropping all my plans. But now I find that they have deleted my name from the list.”

At many places, the EC had to replace electronic voting machines after complaints of malfunctioning surfaced.
