Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi appears to have assumed an aggressive posture much before the installation of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre as he called upon his party workers to get ready for the battle ahead.

“We will work as a strong opposition. We will set things on fire wherever any obstructions are caused in the way of the people’s welfare,” Gandhi said on his first visit to Amethi after the Lok Sabha polls.

Gandhi said, “This was a difficult election. Despite this, the people of Amethi have stood by us. We thank you and the people for being with us. We will also stand by you at all the times.”

Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, arrived in the constituency on Wednesday to pay a visit to Pure-Nidhanpur Baraulia village where 67 thatched houses had been burnt in a fire on Monday.

Priyanka Vadra asked the district officials to get houses allotted to the villagers under the Indira Awas Yojana.

“We will apply on their behalf for allotment of houses under the Indira Awas Yojana,” she said.

Both the leaders handed over a bag of relief material to the affected people.

While some bags were given by Rahul and Priyanka, they asked the party’s functionaries to distribute the rest of the material in accordance with the list of the affected people prepared by the district administration.
