Sitting parliamentarian Navjot Singh Sidhu won't bat for the party in Punjab after falling out with the alliance partner but his legislator wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, is out playing her role in the game.

On Tuesday, she was on the streets campaigning for Arun Jaitley, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for this seat. With the stalwart's daughter, Sonali, and other relatives, she went door-to-door seeking votes in the Katra Baggian area of the city.

The leader's family requested for mandate to Narendra Modi as prime minister. "I am committed to the BJP and have promised Jaitley Saab full support in this election," said Dr Sidhu, adding that she would ensure that he was leading from her Amritsar (East) assembly constituency in the result.

"I am confident that the love this city gave to Navjot Singh Sidhu will be showered on Jaitley Saab," said the legislator. Asked why her husband was not campaigning, she said: "He is going to the other places where the party is sending him."

Earlier, she had made it open that her husband would not campaign in Punjab because of rift with the Akalis, who are partners in the state's ruling alliance with the BJP. Sidhu endorsed the stance.

Confident about positive result, Sonali Jaitley said Amritsar was the family own city. "I have come to the people to request for support," she said. Asked why Sidhu was missing from the scene, Sonali, said: "He is like family and he must have some other engagement. We are missing him definitely."

After denying ticket to Sidhu, the BJP had fielded his political mentor, Arun Jaitley, from Amritsar. A few days ago, Jaitley himself had visited Sidhu's house, where Dr Sidhu had assured him of support in the campaign. She has kept her work and compensated for the absence of her husband, who is a crowd puller.
