Breaking his silence, sitting Amritsar MP and party’s star campaigner Navjot Singh Sidhu himself took guard on Saturday while confirming that he will not campaign in Punjab and he was just ‘fulfilling’ the wish of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal by doing that.

This comes a day after Sidhu’s wife and CPS Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu categorically mentioned that Sidhu won’t come for campaign in Punjab due to his rift with Akali Dal.

Talking to HT over phone from Bangladesh, the cricketer turned politician, who was dropped by the BJP this time and ticket was given to senior leader and his own guru Arun Jaitley, said, “It was Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who did not want me to contest the elections. He was firm against me. So why would I come to Punjab for campaign. By not coming I am just fulfilling the wish of Badal Saab.”

On a question that Jaitley is his guru and if asked, will he not campaign for him, Sidhu said, “I am no more MP now. I do not have any post. I am simply soldier of the party. My wife is MLA and is representing the Sidhu family in Amritsar. She will campaign hard for Jaitley sir.”

When asked that the BJP candidate Arun Jaitley had said that it was Sidhu who persuaded him to contest from Amritsar, the cricketer turned politician replied, “I had repeatedly said till the last that I want to contest only from Amritsar.”

The three time MP had been at the loggerheads with the Akali Dal ever since he accused the CM Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal Sukhbir Badal of ignoring his projects.

Other than this Sidhu also had a rift with Akali Minister Bikram Majithia. Even the Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi had been opposing Sidhu and days before ticket announcement organized a press conference to demand the candidature of Jaitley.

Since past few years, Sidhu had been ignored by the State Government and it was said that rift with the Akali Dal was the major reason of being denied ticket.
In the past too Sidhu had said that it was Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who was against him.

On Friday, BJP candidate Arun Jaitley had visited Sidhu’s place and met CPS Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who promised that she will work whole heartedly for the party.
She had said that, “I will campaign but since Akalis do not like my husband so he will not campaign in Punjab. Why would he come, when Akalis are against him. It is an open secret. We don’t want to have any rift during poll of Jaitley Saab.”

She had even named Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia and Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi and alleged that they never wanted Sidhu to be fielded from Amritsar.

Amarinder praises Sidhu
Congress candidate Capt. Amarinder Singh said, “Sidhu was a good MP and was liked by the people. He worked for the city as well. Sidhu left just because Akalis never liked him and the work he wanted to do was not allowed.
