Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday filed her nomination papers for the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat.

She filed her nomination for the general election at the collectorate office in presence of her son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and four others.

"The people of Rae Bareli have always accepted me with lots of love and I hope they will elect me again," she told reporters outside the collectorate office.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Supreme Court lawyer Ajay Agarwal against her from Rae Bareli. The Aam Aadmi Party has not announced its candidate as yet.

Sonia has represented Rae Bareli since 2004, but the Nehru-Gandhi family's association with the constituency dates back to 1951, when Feroze Gandhi first won the Lok Sabha polls here.

He represented the constituency twice as did his wife and late prime minister Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi was elected in the 1960s and also in 1980.

In 2009, Sonia won Rae Bareli with a margin of 73% over her closest opponent.

She was given a rousing welcome when she arrived in Rae Bareli to file her nomination papers. The three-time MP from the constituency was showered with rose petals, reflecting the

enthusiasm of the people over her arrival.

Gandhi's white SUV weaved its way through the town making several stops, allowing Congress workers and others to greet and garland her.

The Congress chief had performed a "hawan" earlier in the day before filing her nomination.
